Concept cars
“ i ” concept test car
“ i ” features a small body size with the powertrain in a midship layout. The new mid-engine/rear-wheel drive platform realizes a concept test car for a next-generation small car that marries outstanding interior comfort with excellent crashworthiness. Targeted principally at stylish young drivers, this is a proposal for a small car that wins the hearts and souls of and brings pleasure to its users.
- The mid-engine layout enables a no-frills but distinctive one-motion form that gives sparkling expression to the car’s sporty and fun-to-drive qualities.
- Giving expression to the car’s hi-tech and nimble qualities, the light and airy interior is characterized by seats made of transparent plastic with a sheen and by a cleanly composed dashboard that appears to “hover”.
- Features enhancing environmental performance include a lightweight body built on an aluminum space-frame, a powertrain that mates a CVT to a new 1.0-liter MIVEC engine that incorporates Mitsubishi’s Smart Idling system, and aerodynamics that realize very low drag.
- In the ADAC 1 [ FIA 2 EcoTest ], “ i ” returned an average consumption of 3.8 liters/100 km with emissions of 89 g/km of CO2, thus meeting both the Three Liter Car fuel economy and the 90 g/km Euro 4 emissions standards and becoming the first car to achieve 5-star ratings in both tests.
- The company is planning to introduce a small car incorporating some of the concepts embodied in “ i ” and adapted for the kei minicar category on the Japanese market in 2005.

“SE · RO” concept car
SE · RO employs the same mid-engine layout as “ i ”. Using the new mid-engine/rear-wheel drive platform, this is a concept car designed to fit the Japanese kei minicar dimensions. Targeted mainly at male owners over 35, SE · RO proposes a new kind of lifestyle that changes the value register for the minicar category. This is just the car for going out to parties with friends; that provides a hobby workspace inside the vehicle; for getting away from the city and enjoying outdoor pursuits.
- With softly styled front and rear ends, the exterior design features richly expressive styling that clearly sets SE · RO apart from conventional one-box minicar wagons. The hand-crafted aluminum body outer panels give the car an airplane of the future image.
- The packaging uses the new midship layout platform to locate the engine and other powertrain components between the two axles and provides a roomy interior space using sharply truncated overhangs and locating two rows of seats within the longish wheelbase.
- The rear seat backs and squabs can be folded up and back into the luggage compartment to create a generous workspace. Or, the rear seat squabs can be slid forward and the seat back folded down forward to form a flat surface that creates a very spacious luggage compartment. This kind of flexibility enables the rear compartment to be optimally arranged for occupant comfort, to create a workspace or to carry extra luggage.

- CZ2 Cabriolet is defined by styling that is elegant yet sharp. The use of a canvas top rather than the retractable steel roof currently in vogue accentuates the elegance that highlights the charm of this open compact.
- In line with Mitsubishi’s Japanese Modern design aesthetic, CZ2 Cabriolet’s interior blends natural and hi-tech features. The casually chic color scheme complements the minimalist design theme to provide an interior that offers comfort, utility and a restful ambience.

Technology
New-generation engines
The new-generation family of power units comprises: the “mini engine series” of 0.66L and 1-liter 3-cylinder engines; the “small engine series” of 1.1-liter 3-cylinder and 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engines; and the “compact series” of 1.8-liter, 2.0 liter and 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engines.
The new engine family has been developed employing the very latest technologies and to realize the common themes of high power outputs, low fuel consumption, light in weight, compact in size, and low in cost.
Mini engine series
The new mini engine series has been developed by MMC and is available in both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged versions. The engines are to be manufactured in Japan. The Mitsubishi “ i ” concept test car is powered by the naturally-aspirated 1.0-liter engine, and the “SE-RO” concept car by the 0.66L turbocharged version.
Small engine series
The small engine series has been jointly developed by MMC and DaimlerChrysler. The engine will be jointly produced at the new 50/50 joint-venture company in eastern Germany.
Compact engine series
The compact engine series has been developed by a company in which MMC, Chrysler Group and Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) all have equal equity shares. The joint-venture company has decided that HMC will be principally responsible for the design and development of the engine series. The resources of all three companies will be exploited to the full as the latest technologies are incorporated to make this a highly competitive engine series. The engines will be manufactured in Japan, the U.S. and Korea, with plans calling for annual production in excess of 1.5 million units for the global market.
Next-generation GDI
MMC is currently developing a new gasoline-direct injection (GDI) version of the compact engine series which, having the largest displacement of the new-generation engine family described above, delivers the greatest fuel-saving benefits of direct injection. As with the base compact engine, the new GDI unit will benefit from weight reductions and higher efficiencies. In addition, GDI’s frugal fuel economy, its principal feature, will be improved further by extending the stratified lean-burn operating range. The introduction of new catalyst technologies will also contribute to cleaner emissions performance.
MITSUBISHI FCV
The MITSUBISHI FCV fuel-cell vehicle is a Mitsubishi Grandis powered by DaimlerChrysler’s FC-System and will participate in the Japan Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Demonstration Project (JHFC Project) funded by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Exploiting the benefits of its alliance with DaimlerChrysler to maximum advantage, MMC decided to use DaimlerChrysler’s very latest fuel-cell system, which employs Ballard Power System’s fuel cell stack and power module, to power the MITSUBISHI FCV.
Show models
Lancer Evolution VIII MR4
Lancer Evolution VIII MR uses slick-response Bilstein shocks for improved handling. The aluminum roof panel and other reductions in body weight have lowered the center of gravity to realize more natural roll characteristics. Detail improvements have also been made to Mitsubishi’s own electronic all-wheel drive, to the ACD 5 + Super AYC 6 traction control and to the Sports ABS systems. The Lancer Evolution VIII on display at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show takes the MR designation traditionally reserved for Mitsubishi Motors high-performance models and used first on the Galant GTO
Eclipse Spyder
The Eclipse series continues to win wide acclaim for its advanced styling and its segment-leading driving performance in North America. The model on display at the Tokyo Motor Show is the Eclipse Spyder, which boasts outstanding dynamic performance and delivers the exhilaration of open-top driving.

Lancer Self-transporter model
Enabling wheelchair users to drive themselves, this model features a swivels and then slides outboard to facilitate access from a wheelchair, a sliding right side rear door and an automated loader that stows the wheelchair away behind the driver’s seat.
Grandis Automated Swivel, Slide & Lower Seat model
In a fully-powered operation, the front passenger seat swivels round 90-degrees electrically and then slides out and down in a simple and safe process that facilitates entry to and exit from the car. The computer-controlled system maintains a minimum of 375 mm of foot space while the seat is swiveling round.
